Variable Area & Variable Area Meters: Armored and Glass Tube Mechanical Indicators

Quick Answer: Variable area meters measure flow by a float position in a tapered tube. Armored metal tube models handle high pressure, high temperature and hazardous fluids. Glass tube models provide low cost local indication for clean liquids and gases. Choose armored for process lines and glass tube for utility or purge flow.

Silver Instruments supplies variable area meters from DN15 to DN150. We build armored and glass tube styles with local mechanical indicators. Some engineers still call them rotameters. You can add 4-20 mA HART output or PT100 temperature signal if your control system needs remote data.

Armored Variable Area Flow Meters for Process Lines

Armored variable area meters use a metal tube. The float movement is transferred to the indicator by magnetic coupling. This design suits liquids, gases and steam. You can order stainless steel 316, PTFE lining, or Hastelloy internals for corrosive media.

Why choose armored meters? One reason is pressure. A standard armored VA meter can handle 40 bar to 400 bar depending on size. Temperature can reach 400 °C with a high temperature design. This matters in steam injection, hot oil, and reactor feed lines.

In practice, most engineers skip glass tube for anything above 10 bar. Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us for a replacement glass tube meter for a chlorination skid. The original glass tube cracked during a pressure spike. We supplied a DN15 armored meter with PTFE liner. That solved the problem.

Glass Tube Variable Area Flow Meters for Low Pressure and Clean Fluids

Glass tube variable area meters are simple. The fluid lifts a float inside a borosilicate glass tube. The operator reads flow against a scale. No external power is needed. This type works well for air, water, nitrogen, and clear liquids.

Glass tube meters are common on small skids, gas analyzers, filter flushing lines and lab test rigs. They are low cost and easy to install. You can order 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, DN15, DN25 and DN40 connections. Typical accuracy is 2.5% of full scale. For higher precision, we can supply 1.6% class for DN15 and DN25.

Mechanical Indicators and Optional Transmitters

The mechanical indicator is the local display. A magnetic follower moves along a scale. The scale can be engraved in L/h, m3/h, kg/h, SCFH or GPM. We ask for your flow range and fluid density so the scale matches the application.

If you need remote output, add a 4-20 mA HART transmitter. For gas flows, you can add a PT100 temperature sensor and pressure transmitter to compensate mass flow. ATEX Zone 1 versions are available for hazardous areas.

Applications by Industry and Region

Oil and gas customers in the Middle East use armored variable area meters for purge flow on analyzer panels and seal flush lines. Water and wastewater plants in Southeast Asia install glass tube meters for chemical dosing skids. Food and beverage producers in Australia and New Zealand use sanitary connections for CIP water and nitrogen purge. Marine operators in Singapore and Brazil buy compact armored meters for fuel oil and lube oil lines.

A paint manufacturer in Indonesia ordered 20 glass tube meters for solvent and air lines. We engraved each scale in mL/min because their batch recipe used small flow rates.

How to Size and Specify a Variable Area Meter

Send us four data points: pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size DN, and flow range in kg/h or L/h. Also tell us the fluid name, density in kg/m3, viscosity in cP, and whether the area is hazardous. This helps us select the correct tube material, float material and indicator scale.

Here is the thing. A variable area meter is not a universal device. Viscosity above 10 cP changes float resp
