How a Rotameter Flow Meter Works

In practice, a rotameter has only two main parts. A tapered tube sits vertically. A float moves inside that tube. Flow enters from the bottom. The float rises until the force from the fluid balances the float weight. The top edge of the float indicates the flow rate on a scale.

Most engineers skip the full force balance calculation. The important point is that the reading is linear on many direct reading scales. No power supply is needed. No transmitter is required for local indication. This is why rotameters still appear on skids, purging panels, laboratory lines, and cooling water circuits.

Accuracy is usually plus or minus 2 percent of full scale. Repeatability is better, often plus or minus 0.25 percent. Turndown is around 10 to 1. That is enough for many utility and dosing applications.

Metal Tube vs Acrylic Tube Flow Rotameters

Metal tube rotameters are built for high pressure, high temperature, or hazardous fluids. A magnetic follower moves inside a sealed metal tube. The flow reading shows on a separate indicator. This design suits steam condensate, hot oil, nitrogen purge, fuel gas, and ammonia lines. Standard ranges cover DN15 to DN150, up to 40 bar and 200 °C depending on body and liner selection.

For opaque liquids or dirty gas, choose a metal tube rotameter with magnetic indication. For clear water at ambient temperature, an acrylic tube unit is usually the faster and cheaper choice.

Gas and Liquid Applications That Fit a Rotameter

Rotameter flow meters work well where operators need an immediate visual reading. A nitrogen purge panel at 6 bar, a cooling water return line at 3 bar, a biogas flare line, a chemical dosing pump calibration loop, or a clean air test bench are typical examples.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A water treatment contractor in Vietnam asked for 12 acrylic rotameters for antiscalant dosing lines. The pipe size was DN15. Flow range was 1 to 10 litres per hour. They installed the rotameters in a day because the units needed no wiring.

A dairy in Australia uses SS316 metal tube rotameters with tri-clamp connections on a clean in place skid. The rotameters verify return flow during hot caustic circulation. A gas distributor in the UAE uses DN25 metal tube rotameters for nitrogen purge at 8 bar. Each one has a 4-20 mA HART transmitter for remote monitoring.

Installation Notes and Common Mistakes

Vertical mounting is standard. The flow must enter from the bottom and leave from the top. Liquid rotameters can read high if bubbles collect in the tube. Gas rotameters can read low if liquid droplets stick to the float.

Do not select a rotameter based only on pipe size. Use the actual flow range at operating temperature and pressure. For gas, always provide normal cubic metres per hour plus operating pressure and temperature. A rotameter scaled for air at standard conditions will not read correctly on compressed air at 9 bar unless the scale is corrected.
