Diesel Oil Flow Meter ATEX Explosion-Proof Requirements

Quick Answer

For diesel fuel transfer, generator supply, or custody transfer in hazardous areas, you need a flow meter with valid ATEX certification. Silver Automation Instruments supplies oval gear and Coriolis mass flow meters certified for ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2, with Ex ia IIC T4 or T6 protection. Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and flow range to get a specific quote with ATEX certificates.

Why ATEX Matters for Diesel Flow Measurement

Diesel is classified as a flammable liquid. Even though the flash point of diesel is typically above 55 °C, hot ambient temperatures in the Middle East, Africa, or Australia can concentrate vapors near filling stations, day tanks, or ship bunker operations. Under ATEX directive 2014/34/EU, these areas are often zoned as Zone 1 or Zone 2. A non-certified flow meter in such a location is a safety risk and a compliance failure. Last year a fuel depot in Ghana had to stop loading operations because their flow meters lacked ATEX markings. The inspector required immediate replacement before the terminal could reopen.

Silver Instruments ATEX Flow Meter Options for Diesel

We offer two main ATEX-compliant flow meter types for diesel. The positive displacement oval gear flow meter, model OMGM, handles flow from 1 to 200 L/min and comes in sizes from DN15 to DN50. The meter body is cast iron or 316L stainless steel, with PTFE gears for clean diesel. The OMGM series carries an ATEX II 2G Ex ia IIC T4 certificate, which is suitable for Zone 1. Accuracy is ±0.5% of reading with a repeatability of ±0.03%. The standard output is a 4-20 mA HART signal plus a pulse output for totalization.

For larger lines, blending applications, or custody transfer, we recommend the CMFM Coriolis mass flow meter. It measures mass flow in kg/h directly, independent of viscosity changes. Sizes range from DN3 to DN150, with ATEX II 2G Ex ia IIC T6 certification. The T6 temperature class gives an extra safety margin on hot diesel lines. You also get density and temperature readings from one instrument. Both meter types come with PT100 temperature sensors as an option and require no straight pipe runs.

Key ATEX Markings Engineers Should Check

When you inspect the nameplate, look for the Ex marking string. For most diesel metering, Ex ia IIC T4 or T6 is the standard we supply. The "ia" means intrinsic safety, acceptable for Zone 1. If your diesel loading skid is rated Zone 2 only, an Ex ic or Ex nA label also meets the requirement, but we standardize on ia because it allows future re-zoning without hardware change. The IIC group covers hydrogen and acetylene atmospheres, which is stricter than the IIB group typical for diesel. The T4 temperature class limits surface temperature to 135 °C, well below the autoignition point of diesel (around 210 °C). A Real Installation Case from Vietnam

A customer in Vietnam operated a diesel burner supply line with a standard turbine flow meter. During a periodic safety audit, the inspector flagged the meter because the pump room was classified Zone 1. The turbine meter had no ATEX approval. We supplied an OMGM ATEX oval gear flow meter in DN25 with an M20 cable gland and a remote display. The installation took less than half a day. The meter now reports flow data via 4-20 mA to the DCS and pulses to a local batch controller. Most engineers skip the grounding and filtering steps, but for positive displacement meters you must install a Y strainer with 60 mesh upstream to protect the gears from debris in diesel.

FAQ

Can I use a standard oval gear meter for diesel in an ATEX Zone 2 area?
No. Even in Zone 2, ignition sources must be controlled. You need a meter with an Ex ic, nA, or ia marking. A standard non-certified oval gear meter has no gas group or temperature class documentation and will fail a safety audit.

What is the minimum flow rate your ATEX diesel meter can measure?
The OMGM oval gear meter measures from 1 L/min up to 200 L/min. For lower flows, such as pilot diesel feeds (0.2 to 0.5 L/min), we can supply a smaller Coriolis meter with ATEX certification, model CMFM-DN3.

Do you supply ATEX-certified flow meters for marine diesel engines?
Yes. We have delivered ATEX and IECEx certified oval gear meters for fishing vessels in Southeast Asia and for offshore supply ships in the North Sea. The meters are sealed against salt spray and vibration. Mention your engine injection flow range when you request a quote.

How do I order a diesel flow meter with ATEX certificate?
Send us the following data: diesel flow range (min, normal, max), operating pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size (DN), connection type (flanged or threaded), and zone classification. We will prepare a quotation that includes the ATEX certificate number, material test reports, and a factory calibration certificate at no extra cost.

What is the difference between Ex ia and Ex d for diesel meters?
Ex ia uses intrinsic safety: the electrical energy in the circuit is limited so it cannot cause an explosion. Ex d uses a flameproof enclosure that contains an explosion inside a heavy housing. For diesel flow meters with pulse or 4-20 mA outputs, Ex ia is lighter, cheaper, and easier to wire. Ex d is more common for large motor-driven meters, not for small inline diesel meters.
