Restmo Water Flow Meter Manual: Outdoor Hose Timer Programming Guide

Quick Answer

To program a Restmo outdoor hose timer, first set the current time, then choose how long you want water to flow and how often. Most models need a stable water pressure between 2 and 6 bar for the solenoid valve to close properly. If your timer skips cycles or drips constantly, check the filter washer first. We have seen this on customer sites many times.

What You Need Before You Start

Restmo timers fit a standard 3/4 inch garden tap or a G1/2 threaded outlet. The internal flow sensor works best when the flow rate stays above 8 litres per minute. In practice, if you use very small drip lines with only 2 L/min, the turbine wheel may not spin and the meter will read zero. Grab two fresh AA alkaline batteries. Remove the plastic tab from the battery compartment. The LCD screen should wake up immediately.

Engineers who deal with larger lines should note that this timer is designed for residential garden hoses, not for DN25 or bigger process pipes. For industrial water batching or chemical dosing, you need a different class of instrument like an electromagnetic flow meter with 4-20 mA HART output and PTFE liner.

Step by Step Programming

Press and hold the SET button for 3 seconds until the hour digit flashes. Use the plus and minus keys to adjust the current hour. The clock uses a 24 hour format so 14:00 means 2 PM. Press SET again to move to minutes. Most engineers skip this part but setting the correct time is critical if you want the timer to start at dawn.

After confirming the clock, you land on WATERING DURATION. The display shows a number in minutes. You can select anything from 1 minute to 240 minutes. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia once used a similar timer to fill 100 litre mixing tanks and set the duration to exactly 22 minutes because their tap delivered 4.5 L/min. That is the kind of detail you learn only on site.

Press SET once more to choose FREQUENCY. Options vary by model but you typically see 1h, 2h, 4h, 6h, 8h, 12h, 24h, 48h, 72h or a specific day cycle like every Monday and Thursday. If you select 24h, the valve opens once per day for the duration you already set. To skip a day, choose 48h. Some versions let you program up to 3 separate cycles per day.

The final step is MANUAL or AUTO mode. Leave it on AUTO for scheduled operation. Press the MANUAL button if you want to open the valve immediately for a quick test. The manual override stops automatically after the default run time.

Common Error Codes and Fixes

Low Battery icon blinking. The timer will not close the valve fully when the batteries are weak. Even if the screen still looks fine, the solenoid needs a strong current to actuate. Change both batteries at once. Do not mix old and new cells.

E1 or ERR1 on screen. The flow sensor turbine is stuck. Unscrew the timer from the tap and check for sand or small snails blocking the rotor. Clean it with a soft brush and rinse under low pressure water. In farm installations from Thailand we often find fine silt that builds up after just two weeks.

Zero flow on display when water is running. The minimum flow rate may not be reached. Try opening the tap fully. If the problem persists while using drip irrigation with a pressure reducer, you may need a mini flow sensor bypass. For those sit

uations our team often suggests a small oval gear flow meter for diesel or low flow water measurement because it reads flows down to 5 L/h with ±0.5% accuracy.

Mounting and Weather Protection

Do not bury the timer. It is rated IPX5 for rain but not for immersion. Mount it at least 30 cm above ground and avoid direct sun on the LCD panel for more than 6 hours a day. In the Middle East we have seen LCD screens turn completely black by 2 PM in July when the ambient temperature crosses 55°C. Use a simple plastic shield or plant cover.

Always install the timer after your backflow preventer and before any fertiliser injector. Fertilisers and chemicals will corrode the brass adaptor and the tiny plastic gears inside the flow sensor. If you need to dose aggressive fluids like sodium hypochlorite or sulphuric acid, the wetted parts must be PVDF or Hastelloy, not nylon. Send us your chemical concentration, temperature (°C) and pipe size (DN) and we can recommend a mag flow meter or a non metallic Coriolis meter for that task.

FAQ

Why does my timer leak from the swivel connector? The rubber O ring inside the tap adaptor gets hard after 6 to 12 months. Replace it with a standard 24 mm x 3 mm garden hose washer. Do not use thread tape on the plastic threads because it can crack the housing when you tighten it too much.

Can I connect two timers in series? No. Each timer contains its own solenoid valve that restricts flow. The second timer will see low inlet pressure and the internal flow meter may show erratic readings. Split the flow with a Y connector and run both timers in parallel instead.

How long do the batteries last? A pair of alkaline AA cells lasts about 6 months with one 30 minute cycle per day. Lithium batteries can stretch that to 12 months. If you operate in cold mountain regions where night temperature falls below 0°C, switch to lithium cells because alkaline voltage drops fast in the cold.

The timer switches on but the water does not stop. Dirt under the diaphragm. Remove the bottom cap and clean the pin with vinegar if you have hard water. In industrial applications with recycled water containing high levels of calcium carbonate, you may be better off with a full bore stainless steel solenoid valve controlled by a separate flow totalizer. We supply ATEX Zone 1 approved versions for those installations.

Can I use this timer with a pump? Only if the pump has a pressure switch and a small pressure tank. Direct pump start against a closed solenoid creates a water hammer that can burst the plastic valve body. Install a 2 bar pressure relief valve before the timer for safety.

For outdoor garden use the Restmo timer handles 10 to 50 L/min reliably. But when you move into batching, chemical injection, or custody transfer applications in the oil and gas, food and beverage or wastewater sectors, you need industrial flow meters with pulse output, 4-20 mA, and digital communication. Silver Automation Instruments supplies electromagnetic, vortex, turbine, Coriolis and oval gear flow meters to customers in 80 countries.
