Flow Indicator Transmitters: Combination Local Dials with 4-20mA Output Electronics
Quick Answer
A flow indicator transmitter combines a local dial and a 4-20mA output in one instrument. The operator reads flow at the pipe. The PLC or DCS receives the same signal from a two-wire loop. For most DN15 to DN100 lines, a metal tube body with SS316 wetted parts covers water, air, fuel oil, and many chemical feed applications.
What Is a Flow Indicator Transmitter
This instrument has two jobs. The local dial shows the flow value without any wiring from the control room. The electronic module converts the float position into a 4-20mA signal. That signal goes to a PLC, DCS, remote display, or data logger.
We see these devices in skid systems, water treatment plants, fuel oil lines, and gas blending panels. They solve a basic problem. You need local visibility for maintenance. You also need remote data for control. A single flow indicator transmitter gives you both.
Common Applications
Water and wastewater plants use DN25 to DN80 metal tube units for chemical dosing lines. A customer in Malaysia installed 14 units on PAC dosing skids. The local dial helps site staff check flow during tank refills. The 4-20mA signal feeds the plant SCADA.
Fuel oil skids often use DN15 to DN40 flow indicator transmitters for diesel and heavy fuel. The dial is useful during burner start-up. The 4-20mA output gives the control system a continuous value.
Compressed air and nitrogen lines also use these instruments. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam ordered DN20 SS316 units for solvent flow lines. They used HART on the 4-20mA loop for remote configuration.
Key Selection Parameters
Here is the thing. Pipe size alone is not a flow range. Many engineers select the meter by pipe size alone. That causes poor accuracy at low flow. Specify minimum and maximum flow in kg/h, L/h, or m3/h. Then Silver Instruments can set the dial scale and the transmitter span.
Fluid type matters. Air, nitrogen, water, diesel, and weak acid are different. Wetted parts must match. SS316 is standard for many industrial fluids. PTFE internals help with aggressive chemicals. Check the temperature and pressure. Standard units handle 200 °C and 40 bar depending on the body.
For viscous liquids above 50 cP, tell us the viscosity. The float position depends on viscosity at low flow. A correction may be needed for fuels, oils, or polymer solutions. Output options include a plain 4-20mA two-wire loop and a 4-20mA HART signal. HART adds remote setup and diagnostics. A local dial can be analog only or include a small LCD totalizer. For hazardous areas, ask for ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 certification.
Local Dial vs Blind Transmitter
Do not confuse a flow indicator transmitter with a blind flow transmitter. A blind transmitter sends only a signal. A local dial unit keeps the mechanical indication. In practice, this helps a lot during commissioning and maintenance. One operator can see the flow at the pipe without opening the control system.
The dial is also a good sanity check. If the SCADA value does not match the local dial, you can isolate the electrical loop or the PLC input card. We have seen this on customer sites many times.
Installation and Wiring Notes
Mount metal tube flow indicator transmitters vertically. The flow should go upward through the tube. Some designs allow horizontal installation but check the model first. Keep the meter away from strong vibration and magnetic fields. The float position depends on gravity and flow force.
Use shielded twisted pair cable for the 4-20mA loop. Ground the shield at one end only. The usual supply is 24 VDC. Loop resistance must match the power supply and the barrier if you use an isolator. Most engineers skip this part. A loop with too much resistance will not drive the fu
