Mass Flow Meter Air: Electronic Precision Industrial Gas Controls
Quick Answer
Silver Instruments supplies thermal mass flow meters for air and industrial gas control. These devices measure mass flow directly in kg/h or Nm³/h. You get 4-20 mA HART, RS485 Modbus, pulse output, and optional ATEX Zone 1 protection.
Why Mass Flow Instead of Volume Flow
Air volume changes with pressure and temperature. A compressor room at 32 °C and 7 bar has a different air density than a pipe at 18 °C and 5 bar. Thermal mass flow sensors measure gas molecules hitting a heated RTD. That gives you kg/h or Nm³/h directly. No separate pressure transmitter or flow computer is needed.
In practice most energy managers track compressed air in Nm³/h. A mass meter removes the density correction step. That saves engineering time and avoids errors when ambient conditions shift between morning and afternoon.
Recommended Models for Air and Industrial Gas
We supply inline and insertion thermal mass flow meters. For small lines DN15 to DN50 choose the inline body. For larger pipes DN80 to DN300 an insertion probe reduces cost and installation time.
Example pairing. A semiconductor packaging line in Malaysia needed nitrogen flow control at 0.5 to 25 Nm³/h. We supplied a DN15 inline meter with 316L wetted parts and 4-20 mA HART output. The process PLC used the HART signal for flow totalizing and alarm set points.
Another case. A water treatment plant in Colombia measured blower air to a dissolved air flotation unit. They used an insertion probe in a DN150 carbon steel pipe. Output was RS485 Modbus RTU to the SCADA system. Range was 0 to 800 Nm³/h.
Key Specifications That Matter
For electronic precision industrial gas controls keep these specifications in view. Accuracy is ±1.0 percent of reading plus ±0.5 percent of full scale. Turndown is 100:1. Response time is under 1 second. The sensor uses a heated PT100 RTD and a reference PT100 for temperature compensation.
Process temperature range is -40 to 200 °C. Pressure rating is 4.0 MPa for inline meters. Insertion probes handle up to 2.5 MPa. Wetted materials are SS304 or SS316L. For corrosive gas like biogas or wet chlorine use Hastelloy C sensor elements.
Outputs include 4-20 mA, HART, RS485 Modbus RTU, and pulse. Power options are 24 VDC or 85-265 VAC. Approvals include ATEX Zone 1 and IECEx for hazardous areas. SIL2 is available on request.
Installation and Field Notes
Install the sensor away from elbows, valves, and reduce

Most engineers skip this part on the first install. We have seen it on customer sites many times. A paint manufacturer in Thailand reported low nitrogen flow values. The probe was inserted only 30 percent into the pipe. After adjusting insertion depth to the mark on the stem the reading matched the reference meter within 0.8 percent.
For compressed air service install a filter and a dryer upstream. Water droplets and oil mist damage the sensor. The meter itself has no moving parts, but a clean gas stream keeps the sensor stable for years.
How to Request a Quote
Send us your gas type, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range in kg/h or Nm³/h. Include the signal type you need, 4-20 mA HART or RS485 Modbus. For hazardous area service tell us the zone classification.

FAQ
Can the meter measure compressed air flow in a 50 mm line? Yes. A DN50 inline thermal mass flow meter handles typical compressed air ranges from 2 to 500 Nm³/h. Give us the minimum and maximum flow values to size it correctly.
What output options are available for industrial gas control? You get 4-20 mA, HART, RS485 Modbus RTU, and pulse. HART is common for PLC integration. Modbus RTU works well when multiple meters connect to a SCADA system.
Does the meter work in ATEX Zone 1 areas? Yes. We supply ATEX Zone 1 and IECEx versions for flammable gas or solvent vapor atmospheres. Tell us the gas group and temperature class.
Can I use one device for oxygen and nitrogen? Yes, but you must specify the gas during calibration. The sensor is calibrated with air or the target gas. For oxygen service use cleaned wetted parts and avoid oil contamination.
What straight run length do I need? Keep 15D upstream and 5D downstream for inline meters. Insertion probes are more forgiving but still need about 10D upstream when installed after an elbow.
