Mechanical Flow Meter for Water with Dial Display and Positive Displacement Valves
Quick Answer
Mechanical water meters with dial display and built-in positive displacement valves measure totalised flow without power. They work well for clean water in DN15 to DN50 lines up to 50 °C and 16 bar. Silver Instruments supplies these meters for batch control, sub-metering, and irrigation across Australia, Vietnam, and the Middle East.
What This Meter Actually Does on Site
You install a positive displacement water meter with a mechanical dial because you need a local totaliser that requires zero wiring. The internal oscillating piston or nutating disc traps a fixed volume of water in a measuring chamber. Each cycle rotates a magnet, which drives the mechanical counter. The dial shows cubic metres or litres. There is no 4-20 mA output, no Modbus, no battery to change. We have seen these meters used in rural water supply schemes in the Philippines where power is not reliable and the operator only checks the reading once a week.
The integrated valve sits directly on the meter body. In most cases it is a simple ball valve or a gate valve that allows you to isolate the line upstream of the measuring element. This matters when you need to replace the strainer or clean the chamber without draining the entire pipe run. A customer in Saudi Arabia told us they put these on every villa water supply line inside a local distribution manifold. Each villa has a meter with a valve. Maintenance shuts off only one unit.
Positive Displacement Principle for Water
A nutating disc moves inside a conical measuring chamber. Water enters through the inlet port, pushes the disc, and exits through the outlet. The disc wobbles. A magnet on the disc shaft rotates a follower magnet inside the sealed register. The gear train turns the dial pointers. Accuracy at stable flow is around ±2% of reading, sometimes ±1% for the upper flow range. Repeatability is good for clean water with viscosity around 1 cP. That is why many municipal water utilities still specify PD meters for residential billing in places like Indonesia and Peru.
Here is the thing. PD meters do not like sand, rust flakes, or fibrous debris. A single grain of sand can jam the disc. That is why we always ship a Y-strainer with each meter. The strainer mesh size is typically 0.8 mm or 1.0 mm. In practice, most engineers install the strainer upstream and clean it once every three to six months.
Dial Display Options That Make Sense
The mechanical dial has a series of pointers and a totalising roller counter. The large pointer shows the smallest increments, usually 0.0001 m³ or 1 litre per division. Smaller pointers show 10 L, 100 L, 1 m³, 10 m³. The roller counter displays cumulative volume up to 99,999 or 999,999 litres. There is no backlight, no reset button. The dial is sealed inside a glass or plastic lens. IP68 versions allow short-term flooding, which happens often in pits in coastal areas of West Africa or Fiji.
For remote reading you can add a reed switch pulse output. That is a dry contact that closes every 1, 10, or 100 litres. You wire it to a local RTU or a Silver Instruments paperless recorder. This gives you a hybrid setup: mechanical display for the operator, pulse signal for the SCADA. Several water treatment plants in Thailand use exactly this arrangement on chemical dosing lines for poly aluminium chloride. They track daily volume on the dial and log the pulse count for compliance reports.
Integrated Valve and Its Real Purpose
The valve on a mechanical flow meter for water serves more than isolation. In horizontal installations, the valve body acts as a rigid connection point. It reduces pipe strain on the meter body. When you order from us, we ask for your pipe size, thread type (BSP, NPT, or flanged), and whether the valve handle should be T-bar or lever. We have shipped meters with brass ball valves for 25 mm BSP lines to a dairy in New Zealand. They use it to measure CIP rinse water and isolate the meter during hot water sanitisation cycles at 85 °C.
A common mistake: engineers install the valve on the outlet side and then try to isolate the meter. The measuring chamber stays under pressure and the disc can crack if water hammer hits the dead leg. Always put the isolating valve upstream. We will mark the flow direction with a

Materials and Connection Standards
Body: brass (CW617N) or cast iron for larger sizes. Measuring chamber: engineering plastic like PPS or POM. Disc: hard rubber or plastic. Magnet: ferrite or samarium cobalt for higher temperature. Strainer: stainless steel 304. Maximum temperature for a standard brass meter is 50 °C. For hot water up to 90 °C we offer versions with PTFE internals and a carbon-filled PPS measuring chamber. A food factory in Mexico uses these on pasteurisation water at 88 °C. They measure rinse water to tanks and compare daily totals to pump hours.
Connections: DN15, DN20, DN25, DN32, DN40, DN50 are typical. Threaded ends up to DN50, flanged from DN50 upward. Pressure rating: PN16. Some meters are tested to 25 bar for burst, but we recommend 16 bar as the operating limit. Permanent flow rate Q3 is marked on the dial. Overload flow Q4 is usually 1.25 x Q3. Minimum flow Q1 is 0.03 x Q3 for R160 meters. We stock R80, R100, R160 ratios. The higher the R value, the better the low-flow registration. For a villa sub-meter where someone might leave a dripping tap, R160 catches that 3 litre per hour trickle.
Where these Meters Fit and Where They Fail
Good fits: clean potable water, cooling tower makeup, irrigation with river water that passes a 40-mesh screen, boiler feed water after ion exchange, liquid fertiliser diluted to less than 10 cP. Bad fits: raw sewage, heavy slurries, hydrocarbons that swell rubber discs, water with high iron oxide content that sticks to the magnet, fluids above 100 cP like thick glycerol. We once had a customer in Nigeria who tried to measure palm oil with a standard water PD meter. The disc swelled in two days. We switched them to an oval gear meter with PEEK gears and the problem disappeared.
Why Customers Buy from Silver Instruments
We supply mechanical PD water meters from our Nanjing warehouse. Typical lead time to Sydney or Auckland is 7 to 10 working days by air. For Jebel Ali or Dammam, we ship within the same week. We keep spare parts like replacement dial assemblies, strainers, and gasket kits. You do not need to buy a full meter when only the glass lens cracks. We also offer brass adaptors for BSP to NPT conversion, which matters in the Middle East where mixed standards appear on the same site.
We have seen many importers in Latin America request private label on the dial face. We can print your logo and add your local language. Minimum order quantity depends on the size, but for DN20 and DN25 meters we can do small batches. Send us your required flow range in L/h, pipe size, connection type, and whether you need the valve integrated or separate. Email: [email protected], Tel: +86-135-1213-1526, Whatsapp: 86-135-12131526. Our engineer will select the right Q3 and R ratio and confirm the price including strainer.
FAQ
Does the dial reset to zero after each batch?
No, the mechanical counter is a totaliser without reset. If you need a resettable batch, we add a separate mechanical batch register or a pulse output to a batch controller.
Can I mount the meter vertically?
Horizontal installation is standard. Vertical flow upward is possible if the line is always full. Vertical flow downward is not recommended; air pockets can cause the disc to float and read inaccurately.
What maintenance does the meter need?
Clean the strainer every 3 to 6 months. Inspect the measuring chamber after 2 to 3 years for wear, especially if you have high flow velocity or abrasive particles. We sell a chamber replacement kit for common sizes.
How accurate is the mechanical dial compared to a digital electromagnetic meter?
A PD meter with R160 ratio will give ±2% across the flow range, while an electromagnetic meter delivers ±0.4% with a 4-20 mA output. But the PD meter costs one-tenth the price and does not need a power supply.
Do these meters have NSF or WRAS approval for drinking water?
We can supply meters with WRAS-approved materials for the UK market and ACS for France. For Australia, we have WaterMark certification on request. Mention your regulatory requirement when you enquire.
